Position Size Calculator

Turn a fixed risk into a lot size for any instrument, using its contract size.

Risk

Check your broker's specification. Defaults are common values, not universal.

Risk amount$50.00
Stop distance5.00 · 50.0 pips
Loss per 1.00 lot at stop$500.00
Position size0.10 lots

Actual risk at this size: $50.00

How it is calculated

  1. Risk amount = balance × risk % (or the fixed amount you enter).
  2. Stop distance = |entry − stop loss|, in price.
  3. Loss per 1.00 lot = stop distance × contract size × value of one unit of the quote currency in your account currency.
  4. Lot size = risk amount ÷ loss per lot, rounded DOWN to the 0.01 lot step so the real risk never exceeds your plan.
  5. Conversion: if the quote currency is your account currency the value is 1; if the base currency is your account currency (e.g. USDJPY on a USD account) it is 1 ÷ price; otherwise you enter the rate.
  6. Contract sizes are common broker defaults (gold 100 oz, forex 100,000 units). Check your broker's specification and edit the field if it differs.
