Change of Character (CHoCH)

A change of character is the first break against the trend: in an uptrend, a close below the most recent higher low. It tells you the buyers failed to defend the level they needed.

Learning objectives

  • Identify the protected swing in a trend
  • Recognise the first opposite break
  • Know what confirmation to wait for before acting on it

The protected low

In an uptrend, the higher low that produced the latest BOS is the protected low. Buyers must hold it. When price closes below it, the character of the market has changed: it is no longer making the pattern that defined the trend.

Warning, not reversal

One CHoCH does not prove a reversal. Many trends pause, break a low, and resume. Treat it as the moment to stop looking for buys and start watching whether price can make a lower high and then a new lower low.

Practical example

After three higher highs on the four-hour chart, price closes below the last higher low. Instead of selling immediately, the trader waits for a pullback that fails below the previous high, then a break of the new low. Only then is the structure bearish.

Common mistakes

  • Selling the first CHoCH in a strong higher-timeframe uptrend
  • Confusing an internal swing with the protected swing
  • Ignoring the higher timeframe context

Key takeaways

  • CHoCH is the first break against the trend
  • It shifts you from looking for continuation to watching for reversal
  • Confirmation comes from the next swing, not the break itself
